A WORD OF CAUTION
Stress is the result of the change. Change is a part of life. That means stress is unavoidable. One of the most stressful events in life is “The Big Day” also known as “Tying the Knot”. The planning, the wedding, and the marriage itself is no walk in the park. Stress can be good as it can help you get things done faster, but long-term stress can be a detriment to the body.
Jill White-Huffman, a marriage therapist, encourages couples not to get so caught up in wedding plans, honeymoons, and everything afterward that they forget about marital preparation. When challenges arise, you don’t want to be caught off guard. Focus areas include understanding the importance of a solid foundation, addressing fears, recognizing red flags, resolving conflicts, tackling insecurities, managing in-law and extended family issues, and more.
Many marriages start well but end poorly because partners lack the skills to treat each other properly. Premarital counseling is often overlooked, despite providing tools to handle inevitable differences and build successful, fulfilling relationships. 50% of first marriages, 67% of second marriages, and 74% of third marriages end in divorce. Few people receive education and training on what it takes to establish a successful marriage. This gap may exist because of the stigma around seeking help or limited knowledge about premarital counseling. Without educating yourselves and preparing to face challenges with effective negotiation tools, it can be hard to discuss deep-seated fears, insecurities, and each other’s individual and relational needs and desires—conversations that foster connection rather than distance and division.
PREMARITAL COUNSELING helps couples prepare for one of the most important journeys in their lives. It offers the opportunity to explore family-of-origin issues and spiritual beliefs, develop healthy communication and conflict resolution skills, understand each other’s needs, wants, and desires, and have conversations about finances and goal setting. During premarital sessions, couples are provided with a safe space to discuss topics that may help prevent separation and divorce, and they receive take-home assignments to practice key relationship skills, aiming for lasting change.
My focus when helping couples is to meet them where they are. If you are considering marriage or about to get married, let’s start with a free 15-minute consultation where you share what's on your mind. Without any pressure on my part, we will mutually decide if it feels like a good fit and then schedule your first session to explore further and take the next steps toward building a lasting relationship.
